
SPORT - RELATED TRAINING FOR ACL INJURIES
Just because the athlete has completed treatment and a rehabilitation program, this does not mean they are ready to return to full competition. Graduated exercise assists in preparing the athlete to return to a normal training regime however the completion of this program does not indicate complete readiness. Readiness to return to play is indicated when the athlete is able to participate in a full training session without experiencing pain.
In relation to a basketball player recovering from an ACL tear, progressive workouts that encompass sport - related skills are most effective to use as a training program. The training regimes should especially work to develop and strengthen the injured area for effective and safe performance.
Things to assess in a game situation:
Assessors should be looking for the proficiency of the athlete with game - related skills including power jumps, changes of direction and decision making. Below are some featured drills which would be useful starting points for a rehabilitation training regime. They focus on correct footwork and correct technique upon landing after shooting. Depending on the athlete's stage in the rehabilitation process, a light jog may be an appropriate before training commences. Assessors may also simulate a game situation where the athlete is forced to make the appropriate decisions, ball passes and defence positions. If they are able to perform these over a number of weeks with an absence of pain from the injured knee, they may consider returning to normal game play.
